About Leni Sinclair: A recognized leader of the 1960s-70s counter cultural movement in Detroit and a trusted documenter of the rock n’ roll scene of that same era, Leni Sinclair is known for her vivid photographs which captured faithfully the raw drama that unfolded before her lens. But she may be best known for capturing the raucous rock n’ roll scene of that era, including photographs of such rock legends as Jimi Hendrix and Janis Joplin, and jazz icons such as Miles Davis and Sun Ra. Focusing her lens on musicians and fellow activists from nightclubs to festivals to street demonstrations, Sinclair captured a pivotal era in American history when art and politics intertwined. Some of her photos – including shots of jazz saxophonist John Coltrane and of Nigeria’s rebel music star Fela Kuti – are among the most widely known of their subjects. What seems, at first glance, to be candid scenes featuring musicians, activists, party goers and demonstrators, read together as a more powerful story: that of an American society where art and politics were inextricably intertwined. Of recent notoriety Sinclair was exhibited at Detroit’s MOCAD (Museum of Contemporary Art Detroit) as part of her first major U.S. solo museum exhibition, “Moto City Underground”. 'The Door': Rare early Basquiat, Keith Haring Street Art Photo by Fernando Natalici: 'The Door,' photographed, New York c.1979/1980, represents one of only two known photographs featuring the early graffiti work of a young Jean-Michel Basquiat & Keith Haring together on one image (see upper right & left). Basquiat's tags appear in at least 3 places ('Salt', teepe & skull). The work combines the two most iconic Haring & Basquiat images of all: Haring's radiant baby & Basquiat’s crown; while also presenting the work of Whitney Biennial artist, David Wojnarowicz (Burning House mid upper left) & five time Brazilian Biennial artist Alex Vallauri (acrobat stencils across lower area). Basquiat and Gray at Hurrah's: New York, 1979 by Nicholas Taylor: A rare, intimate look at Jean-Michel Basquiat's history as a musician - this work was one of four Taylor photo's chosen for exhibit at the much noted, Basquiat: Boom For Real exhibition at London's Barbican Centre. Nicholas Taylor (American, b. 1953) is a renowned photographer and musician. Taylor moved to New York in 1977 to pursue a career as a photographer and it was through the vibrant New York art scene that he came to know the young artist, Jean-Michel Basquiat. It was, in fact, his intimate portfolio of photographs documenting his friendship with Basquiat that rocketed Taylor to fame. The two would collaborate in the No Wave band “Gray” before Taylor launched a successful career as a DJ famous for track-looping (named DJ High Priest by Basquiat). His track “Suicide Mode” would later be used in the soundtrack for Julian Schnabel’s 1996 film “Basquiat." Signed limited A2 size print, Edition number 11/100 Tony recalls - I got a call from Jill Furmanovsky saying she’d double booked herself. She had been booked to photograph Bruce Springsteen at Wembley, and some unknown guy at a small venue in The Strand. “She said she would go to the Wembley and asked me to go to photo the other gig. Well it turned out to be Prince at his first ever gig in the UK. Back then nobody was too sure about Prince’s sexuality so I went along to The Strand and assumed he’d be playing at Heaven – a gay venue. I got there, but my name wasn’t on the door which wasn’t too unusual. I talked the security guard around to let me in saying I had to photo this performer who was about to go on stage inside. I got in and realized Prince wasn’t performing there and it was just a normal night in the club. So I had a quick pint of Guinness and left. I had to sprint up the road to the Lyceum knowing that I’d probably miss the support act. I got there in time and got the photos of Prince...
